Emergency Medical Technician

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program at Braxton is structured around the curriculum established by the United States Department of Transportation. This comprehensive 300-hour program emphasizes three core instructional domains: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning.

EMT students at Braxton College will receive comprehensive training in the essential skills and knowledge required to provide high-quality prehospital care. The program covers key topics including:

  • Patient assessment techniques

  • Baseline vital sign monitoring

  • Bandaging and wound care

  • Oxygen therapy administration

  • Safe patient transport procedures

  • Focused and detailed physical examinations

  • Accurate documentation and patient care reporting

  • and much more!

Students will also be introduced to the structure and function of the Emergency Department, gaining insight into the role EMTs play within the broader healthcare system.

Instruction begins in the classroom and laboratory setting, where students develop core competencies through lectures and hands-on practice. Once foundational skills are mastered, students will transition into supervised clinical and field experiences. During their internships, each student will work alongside experienced medical professionals in both field and hospital environments, gaining real-world experience under the direct guidance of a qualified instructor.

This well-rounded approach ensures that graduates are confident, capable, and ready to serve in the demanding field of emergency medical services.

 Features

The primary role of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is to deliver basic emergency medical care and safe patient transportation for individuals experiencing critical or emergent health conditions. EMTs possess the foundational knowledge and clinical skills necessary to assess patients, initiate appropriate interventions, and provide continuous care during transport.

Functioning as integral members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system, EMTs operate under medical oversight and collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals. They are trained to perform life-saving procedures using the basic equipment commonly available in ambulances and prehospital care environments.

As the vital link between the scene of an emergency and the healthcare system, EMTs play a crucial role in ensuring timely, efficient, and compassionate care during the initial stages of medical response.
